I’m going to get started on replacing my head gasket this week, but I don’t think I’ll be able to do it all in one sitting. Is that going to be necessary, though? I can wait until the weekend if that’s the case. I keep the car outside, and I don’t want any water, dirt, or bugs getting inside of the engine. Would it be safe to just lightly clamp/rubber-band plastic bags over any openings that I have to leave? And if so, will that be sufficient in the event of rain? I’ve seen that it should be a 5-hour job for an experienced mechanic, so I’m guessing it will take me around 10, give or take a few, plus however long it takes me to have the cylinder head pressure tested at a shop. (Also, out of curiosity... Am I supposed to test the head itself, the cover, or both?) I also need to flush my coolant while I’m at it. (oil is leaking outward through the gasket into the coolant, so I’m replacing it before the leak starts going the other way) That’s why I want to space it out over two or three days.

Sure, just cover it with a tarp or black trash bag.

Like E92 said, cover it with something that doesn’t create particles. Trash bag works great.

Just tarp it or something but use clean, new tarps. Close the hood to keep it dry. Also what mechanic can do a head gasket in 5 hours? Because I need to know that guy. Good luck on 10 hours, I think even that’s a stretch.

I like to cover stuff like that with a clean towel. I think the towel conforms better to the crevices of the open engine. It also seems less likely to push crud over an edge to the inside of the engine than plastic tarp or bag. If rain is an issue, cover it again with something else that’s waterproof and close the hood. Or double check that water has a way to run off without pooling.

I dunno, that’s just what I’ve read. It’s possible they’re referring to the gasket only and nothing else that comes with it.

make sure you dont get any grit, dust, dirt, grime, bugs, in the engine. cleanliness is the life of a motor...........fresh plastic sheeting, shower curtain, new tarp, beach towel, whatever you can find to keep as much dirt/ debris out of the engine...........
if oil is leaking into the coolant, the head MAY be warped......... just tell the machine shop to check it. its MAYBE a $70 operation to mill the head a few thousandths to get it true again........ pressure testing tests the coolant passages, so just the head...........
